– Healthy tooth.
– Decay beginning.
Only the surface layer of the tooth enamel is achieved. At this point, the patient does not hurt. This is the best time to treat caries. If the enamel is not perforated, the dentist can treat tooth decay with fluoride agents without restoration. It may also recommend other measures to stop the progression of decay and promote remineralization of the tooth. This is the medical approach to caries as opposed to the surgical procedure that is the restoration.
– When the decay reaches the dentin (beige), the tooth is sensitive to hot and cold. The patient may not feel any pain, and if it occurs, it is not persistent. At this point, it is still possible to resolve the issue through restorations only (surgical approach).
– When the decay reaches the pulp (pink), the patient feels a sharp, persistent pain. Root canal treatment monitoring is essential major restorations or tooth must be extracted.
– When the infection (brown) propagates throughout the pulp, the patient can have an abscess, a bacterial infection that causes acute and stabbing pain at the infection site. It might then have to take antibiotics before dental may undertake dental treatment. Just as in the previous stage, the patient will have major restorations and root canal or tooth must be extracted.
